King Gary is looking for a new web host

I’m looking for a new web host to use for King Gary. My hosting expires in a short while, and so I’d like to get your input on what are some good hosts to use. I value personal experience with a particular host, over anything else and over whatever the host themselves say, because that’s what I really think counts. The host that I’m currently with is okay, but I’d like to go out and try different ones because I’m sure there are better ones out there.

I’m not looking for anything too specific regarding disk space and bandwidth because nowadays, they are provided plentifully by hosts, but the particulars that I’ll require include:

  • Ruby on Rails support (preferably they know what they’re doing when it comes to this, and not just another host jumping on the ‘we support Ruby on Rails’ bandwagon)
  • able to support multiple domains through separate control panels

That’s about it.

Please post your recommendations in the comments! Thanks!

I’m with dreamhost and they fit the description, but if you didn’t like Site5 you probably won’t find they are what you are looking for. MediaTemple has “grid hosting” now, which would be an asset if you plan on getting dugg a lot. It’s a little more expensive than a cheap shared server though ($20/month IIRC). I think they are pretty dedicated to Rails, it was either them or Site5 that hired a core Rails developer (again, IIRC). Since you are clearly computer savy, you might look into VPS or dedicated as well. That way you get SSH access and everything that comes with it. I had a good experience with a VPS host recently but I can’t remember the name… But I noticed that Redwood Virtual has accounts starting at $10/month and I am looking for an excuse to try them out.

    Paul,

I’ve got SSH access on my shared Site5 account, and I’m pretty sure that it’s Site5 that hires lots of Rails developers. Their backend is written in Rails. Sometimes, I feel that Site5 load times are a little too long for me, though, so I’m open to new options because my payment contract is expiring soon.

SSH on shared hosting isn’t as fun as on a VPS. With a VPS, you can change PHP/MySQL configuration and access the root directories.

When I said MT hired core Rails developer(s), I meant someone involved in the development of Rails itself, not someone who codes Rails apps.

    Paul,

Who was hired by MT, do you know? Sounds interesting, but I’ve also heard that MT has had lots of downtime recently.

I’m not sure now, but I remember reading somewhere that either they or Site5 employ(s|ed) a core Rails developer. Since you mentioned that site5 uses a Rails backend, maybe it was them after all.

    Paul,

Yeah, it might have been them. Although, I’ve found a few bugs in Site5’s backend, I’ve emailed them over a year ago, and still, the bug remains even after they acknowledged that the bugs existed and that they intended on fixing them. That’s one of the things that bugs me. Oh, and my site was down for a few hours today! :(

I’m using Godaddy for ASP.NET hosting, they are cheap but, support is zero. For php, they offer same price and same zero support lol.

green, I would almost never go with GoDaddy for web hosting. I don’t even use their services for domain names! Plus, last time I checked, they did not support Ruby on Rails, either. :(

Hi Garry, yes i don’t recommend using them too, but after searching 24 months, i finally found the way to fight godaddy. Normally it doesnt let you install applications like dotnetnuke cms, to root folder, but i was succesfully installed dotnetnuke 4.4.1 and 4.5.1 releases, i also released tutorials to how to install dnn cms. (their offical knowledge base says you cant install dnn to root folder) but my articles does not:)

Would you mind if i share the full link to my article here? (With my articles you can install dnn to root and host multiple domains/portals with just 6.95 usd month:) Since im a MCT i don’t need their support to troubleshoot my installations. When i have problems i just switch application pool on my control panel and it works.

How is being a paid customer of GoDaddy fighting them? There are plenty of high quality CMS apps that are designed for the more common (and usually cheaper) LAMP setup, so why use Windows hosting when you have more options in terms of what software you are using?

I mean, a Windows server makes sense in an enterprise environment where you are storing certain data in SQL Server and need this to be accessible by the website, or if you have a bunch of Windows tech guys, but if you are hosting several sites on an open source CMS, a Linux server will open up the possibilities.
