King Gary is looking for a new web host
14 Comments - CLICK HERE to see! »
I’m looking for a new web host to use for King Gary. My hosting expires in a short while, and so I’d like to get your input on what are some good hosts to use. I value personal experience with a particular host, over anything else and over whatever the host themselves say, because that’s what I really think counts. The host that I’m currently with is okay, but I’d like to go out and try different ones because I’m sure there are better ones out there.

Facebook was Twitter before there was Twitter

As of Facebook’s latest update, it looks like they’re doing something that seems very similar to Twitter, the popular microblogging service that has been picking up steam in recent months. This latest update focuses primarily on Facebook’s Status Updates feature, which allows its users to post short messages describing what they’re doing at that point – similarly to how Twitter is used. One of the primary reasons that helped boost Twitter into the limelight, though, was that many of its users connected to the service via a mobile service, allowing them to update their Twitter messages in real time. Facebook’s implementation of Status Updates was a novelty at best, due to the fact that you could only update your status if you were on facebook.com, in a browser of some sort (could be on your mobile, but that wouldn’t be as convenient), and that you were logged in.

Is Google working correctly?

Just a quick update on my ‘Comment Rankings’ WordPress plugin that I released 3 days ago. It looks like my plugin is the #1 hit when searching for ‘comment rankings’ on Google now – but it’s not my site, it’s this site. Props to him for being the #1 search result for that phrase, while my site isn’t even on the first page of results. How’d that happen?

Why MySpace sucks, Facebook rocks, and the power of specifying relationships
13 Comments - CLICK HERE to see! »
I’m not sure about you, but I’ve definitely been witnessing many people fleeing from MySpace and finding joy over at Facebook, instead, in recent months. It’s also been reported that Facebook is the #1 site for teenagers, and Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s 22-year-old founder, is profiled in this month’s edition of Fast Company. What I believe are some of the reasons that people are rapidly moving from MySpace to Facebook include:
- The MySpace layout is really cluttered, whereas Facebook’s is really clean. On MySpace, at first, it seems like a lot is going on so it’s exciting. Once you hit a server error for the umpteenth time, though, then it’s quits for MySpace.
- There is a LOT more privacy on Facebook than on MySpace (there are no less than 7 privacy sections found on Facebook, where each has dozens of settings which control things ranging from your profile, to search results that include you.)

King Gary has a look that’s brand-spanking new!
17 Comments - CLICK HERE to see! »
After much deliberation, mostly with myself, and with other people who have absolutely no design experience (which is why I simply tossed their advice – sorry guys!
), I have finally broken down and decided that my website really needs a major overhaul. Thus, the new look is what you now see before you.
I personally think that this is the best change I’ve made to this site since I started blogging here, and I hope that you’ll agree, too. I’m pretty sure that the old theme didn’t have many fans, so I couldn’t wait to release this new theme for public viewing.
For posterity’s sake, I have saved the old theme. It can still be viewed here if you choose to do so, but I doubt many will take that option. For everyone else, bathe in the warm glow of a new design, and rejoice in the fact that my new design looks much nicer now!
If you’ve got any questions, comments, or concerns, then as always, feel free to post a comment to let me know what’s on your mind

New logo for my site

I created a new logo for this site. Take a look at the logo (in the top left corner!) and tell me what you think, how much the old one sucked, and how much better this one is
(hopefully!)
For comparison, here’s the old one:

Personalized Google Homepages now have personality
Google just added a new feature to the Google Personalized Homepage – themes. www.google.com used to be my browser’s homepage for a long time, and then I finally had an epiphany: most of the tools that I use online have widgets for the Personalized Homepage, so why don’t I just use that as my homepage and use those widgets? (Specifically, Gmail, Google Reader, Google Calendar, a clock/calendar, and the weather.) I made this move about a month ago, and today, they released a new themes feature. I’m currently using the one called ‘City Scape’; there’s a sun in the background, which moves depending on the current time – very cool. The weather in the background image also changes depending on the current weather at my location that I have set.

Why the world needs OpenID (and why it shouldn’t be totally universal)
7 Comments - CLICK HERE to see! »
OpenID is making big news lately, with companies such as Technorati, AOL, WordPress, and Microsoft behind it. This is nice and dandy, but how does it really benefit the typical, casual, internet user? A lot of people that I know, that claim to be ‘web 2.0‘-savvy, have dozens, or even hundreds, of accounts spread across multiple websites, with a large number of that comprised of simply registering an account to test out a new web 2.0 service. So, it isn’t too difficult to imagine that the need for OpenID is high in this particular space.
What about everyone else?

King Gary’s layout is now flexible
7 Comments - CLICK HERE to see! »
King Gary recently changed from fixed to flexible width, meaning now, if you stretch your browser window, the contents of this site will stretch with it. This is particularly useful for those people with 20″ monitors – myself included, when I’m at work (thanks b5)!
I can’t imagine why most websites would want to be fixed; most people I know have their browser windows maximized (whether they want to or not, since it’s the default setting I believe) and so the site could use all that valuable screen real estate that is usually filled with whitespace. I know that switching from a fixed to flexible width comes with some headaches regarding CSS, depending on how many divs you’ve got going, but for most sites, it seems well worth it (especially for ‘content’ sites, where there are articles and other large bodies of writing that populate the website.)

Google is now the #1 feed reader – what does this tell us?
5 Comments - CLICK HERE to see! »
According to FeedBurner’s latest blog post, Google is now the most used feed reader across all of the blogs that use the FeedBurner service. FeedBurner is a service that tracks a feed’s usage over a period of time. This is a very interesting report, and it certainly caused a lot of chatter all around town. While the report is very interesting, it also definitely raises several questions.
