When you look at Facebook‘s Application Directory, you see that next to “All”, it notes “307″, suggesting that there are a total of 307 Facebook Applications in all.

This is not true. 307 simply states the number of Applications that Facebook deems is allowed to be in the Directory, meaning that these are high-quality applications that they believe gives value to most Facebook users. Facebook Application developers can still create Applications, but they are not listed in the Directory unless approved by Facebook.

When people look at the number “307″, they believe that there is a small number of Applications available and that there’s still the chance to create new Applications without competing with others.

This is also not true, since, as I mentioned above, Applications don’t need to be listed in the Directory in order to be used. There are already probably thousands of Facebook Applications available to be used right now.

I’ve noticed that the number of total Applications in the Facebook Directory hasn’t changed in the past few weeks, and so I’m guessing that they’ve received so many submissions that they’ve finally reached the point where they temporarily stop accepting new Applications to list.

This is obviously a disappointment to most Facebook Application developers, because the possibility to quickly propagate a newly created Application to a large number of users is gone. The primary way now to do this now is to proactively advertise your Application on a popular website, in order to gain the traction needed so that it eventually self-propagates.

It’ll be interesting to see if new Applications will be accepted in the near future. I predict that it’ll be a few weeks at the very least before we see this; I’m guessing that it’s not at the very top of their list of todos.

Recently, I’ve been seeing a little icon on websites more and more often. Sometimes, when I least suspect it, I’ll be visiting a well-known open source project or a popular web application, and then my eyes will shift to a box that shows prominently on the homepage, linking to the same site.

I’m talking about the upcoming Webware awards, of course!

The button shown above is a common image seen on websites that have been nominated by the website in a total of 10 different categories; in the end, a total of 100 of the ‘best web 2.0 products’ will be announced on June 18, this coming Monday.

This is a great way for Webware to increase its popularity dramatically because I’ve been seeing websites that have been nominated for an award to link to Webware in order to get more votes; examples include TypePad, Drupal, NewsGator, and ConceptShare. Some websites only link by posting about it on their blog, whereas some others make a big deal out of it and add a link to Webware directly from their homepage.

To be fair, Webware is owned by CNET, which has quite a foothold in the web world already, but even if we look past that, it looks as though the Webware 100 is really working out for them, eh?

During these past few days, I came upon a game called Desktop Tower Defense, which is insanely addictive (and TechCrunch would agree.) I first noticed this game a few months ago, but I didn’t really bother with it since it didn’t look too interesting to me, what with the very minimal graphics. After playing with it for a few hours, though, I’ve come to see that it is a game that can dangerously extend the number of hours that you spend at the computer. If you have a few hours to spare, then take a look at this game and try to beat the Challenge mode that goes up to 100 levels. I’ve reached level 75 so far and I can’t get any higher!

Mashable recently published a post entitled “17 Web 2.0 Sites Optimized for Your Wii“, which contains a list of top websites that are optimized for the built-in Opera web browser on the Nintendo Wii. When I got my Wii, one of the first things that I did was try out the web browser since I thought it was a pretty cool feature on the Wii. I was aware of StumbleUpon‘s new website called Stumble.tv, which is designed specifically for the Wii, so I checked that out first. It’s basically StumbleUpon for videos from YouTube and Google Video, and optimized for the Wii.

Stumble.tv was interesting for the first few minutes, but its novelty quickly wore off for me. Watching YouTube videos on my computer was bad enough, what with the low video quality, but when watched on an LCD TV that’s much larger than my laptop’s monitor, it just wasn’t cutting it for me anymore. The website responds to the Wii Remote‘s buttons, using them as navigational controls; they are pretty useful and intuitive, I’ll give you that.

Another major issue that I have is that if you want to click on links, you have to point the Wii Remote at the link and press a button. Simple enough, right? After a short while, though, it quickly tires out your arm because you constantly hold it in parallel to the ground in a steady position. Playing games on the Wii does not tire out your arms as easily because you are constantly moving around, so you get to flex those muscles. This is why I’d rather just jump back to my computer to do whatever I need to do instead of using the Wii for something that is not one of its main features.

I’m surprised at the number of Wii-compatible sites so far, because a large number of them are simply recycled websites that respond to commands sent by the Wii Remote. I’m still holding my breath for a Wii-compatible website that will blow me away. (Or maybe one of you could point me in the right direction?)

Just a little over a month ago from today, I made a post entitled “Nintendo Wii + Mac Mini = entertainment paradise“, which laid out the way in which I synergized my Mac Mini and Nintendo Wii together to make a pretty damn good entertainment system. Now, the Apple TV just started shipping yesterday, and I don’t think that the Apple TV really has anything extra that justifies purchasing it. This is especially since I’ve already got a Mac Mini (which a lot of people claim is already a great replacement for the Apple TV. And with the added capabilities of the Nintendo Wii’s remote, I don’t see any real justification to get it – but, I will definitely still keep an eye out for one if the price ever falls into range of my budget and I begin to feel inconvenienced by some of the shortfalls of a Mac Mini and Nintendo Wii combination .

As some people know, I purchased a Nintendo Wii about a week ago (from Pittsburgh, PA because they are extremely hard to find here in Toronto!) I’m having a great time with it so far, and have a few events planned and had a few that have passed where we’ve used it to play some games, such as WarioWare, Zelda, and of course, some Wii Sports. I’ve had it for a week now, and so I began to ponder: what else could I do with it?

There’s that Mac Mini that I have…

I have a Mac Mini that I haven’t touched since obtaining my MacBook Pro, and it’s just been sitting on my table, collecting dust. I had thought of using it as an ‘entertainment hub’ for my home for some time, since it has built-in wifi.

The synergy of the Wii and the Mini is a great thing

I thought of purchasing an infrared receiver for my Mac Mini so that my Apple Remote which came with my MacBook Pro could be used for it. My eyes then laid upon my Wii Remote, with its simplified-yet-useful set of buttons, and inside of it, its built-in motion sensor… and I thought, why can’t I use that as a remote for my Mac Mini? Well, it turns out that I can, with the help of DarwiinRemote! I installed the application immediately, and lo-and-behold, I’m now using my Wii Remote as a remote for both my Nintendo Wii AND my Mac Mini. The Wii Remote works with my Mac Mini because both devices have Bluetooth enabled. I’m now deciding upon which media center program to use; my options include Front Row, MediaCentral, and CenterStage, among others.

At this point, the Nintendo Wii is used for gaming purposes, which the Mac Mini can also be used for – but primarily, the Mac Mini is used for viewing media, such as movies or TV. I’m also thinking of also integrating my Tivo box into the equation to include time-shifting abilities, but that’ll be a project for the future.
