News: Apple WWDC 2007 major announcements
I just finished watching Apple’s WWDC 2007 keynote. Below are my thoughts on what has been announced.
Safari
It looks like Apple really wants more than that measly 2% browser market share that it currently holds, with Safari. They’ve just released Safari for Windows as well, giving Windows users the opportunity to try out one of only a few Apple-created application available for the alternative operating system recently (iTunes was a great move for Apple since it was the iPod’s tipping point.)
People have already told me that is really IS a lot faster on Windows than Internet Explorer, so I’m happy about that. I rarely, if ever, use Safari on my Mac since I depend on my Firefox extensions, but as a web developer, this news is great for other developers on Windows because they can finally test their websites in Safari without a Mac.

Free ticket to the “Future of Online Advertising” conference - but I can’t go!

Ryan Carson, the founder of conferences such as FOOA, FOWA, and FOWD, has sent me a free ticket to the “Future of Online Advertising” conference, which I got from ProBlogger. (You might also be able to get a free ticket by going to that post.) Too bad I most likely won’t be able to go, because it conflicts with a bunch of other things going on during that same time! If anyone wants to go, though, then I would advise you to get a free ticket before they begin to feel less generous about it.

The mesh conference 2007 is now officially selling tickets, and is now a go, according to the founders: Mark (whom I work with at b5media), Mathew, Mike, Rob, Stuart, and of course, the official conference blog.
Ah, yes, I’ve got good memories of last year’s inaugural conference. It was actually during that time that I finally decided to start a blog and keep it for at least a month; my first posts are in fact, about the conference itself!

To answer some questions for mesh-ies + 15MOF ’speech’ transcript
3 Comments - CLICK HERE to see! »
I’ve been getting several emails asking some questions, some of which have been said in my 15MOF segment.
Here they are:
Q: What age did you begin web development?
A: 2001 (age 13)
Also, the transcript for my ’speech’ is now here. (Since mesh posted the events on ITC, here’s the transcript if you don’t want to bother listening to it - still hasn’t happened yet):
So, first of all, I hope everyone’s having a great time here at mesh today. I know I am.
Okay, well as you know, my name is Gary King from kinggary.com, and I’m a high school senior. If you read the mesh blog, you’ll also know that the team was nice enough to sell me an already-sold-out mesh student’s ticket, apparently due to my tenacity. But, I think there’s something even more important than simply being tenacious. Now, I know you’ve probably already heard this before, but it’s about being passionate. It’s about choosing something you love and really working at it. I’m not simply talking about these tickets; I’m talking about something on a grander scale. Now, I’m not here to sell you anything today; instead, I’m going to tell you a story of how the web can really empower a person with technology, without any regards to age, race, or gender.

mesh wrap-up

The mesh conference has been great, but sadly, it’s now over. I’ve met many new people, and have also made new friends and contacts.
Also, I did my “speech” today, too, and I (apparently) received mostly good feedback. Here are some:
And of course, thanks to the blog posts about me from the organizers:
I received some job offers and etc., and I’ll follow up to them in the next few days.
More photos of mesh were uploaded to Flickr.

Hundreds of photos have been taken at mesh; feel free to check them out.
Also, mesh is mentioned in Tuesday’s (today’s) Toronto Star, in the Business section (C1); it’s the article entitled “Reality Web” (in the print version; online, the title is “High hopes for next-gen Net”).

I’ll be speaking at the mesh conference

I’ll be speaking at a conference called the mesh conference, thanks to the guys behind it! They’ve chosen me to be one of the speakers of a special event called the “15 Minutes of Fame”.
They also made a post about it - I’m last, but not least, of the list. Just a small excerpt:
Gary is our Special Case winner. A high school student doing some neat things online, Gary turned our communal heads with pure tenacity in getting us to sell him an already-sold-out mesh Student’s ticket.
Stuart MacDonald, one of the organizers of mesh, has also made a post about myself on his blog. An excerpt:
You know how once in a rare while somebody just makes an impression? Well, Gary did that to us. He got us talking, he got us interested. He made an impression, and a good one. We Canadians don’t often “get in there”. Maybe on the ice, in the corners, a bit. But we tend to be fairly reserved and not nearly as assertive as, say, our neighbours to the South. Personally, I think that’s a shame, because some of what we have to share never gets known because our own approach lets it get drowned out.
