My Comics Page

Posted by Gary King on June 19, 2006 at 3:40 pm

Just FYI, if you don’t know about it already, before I started this blog I created a ‘Comics Page’ where I visit once a day to view all my daily comics there. If you want to use it, go ahead. Anyways, this is just for the people who don’t know about it yet but might be interested in it. Also, the comics there are the (main) ones that I read, and I probably won’t add anymore unless I really like the new strips.

1 exam down, 2 more to go

Posted by Gary King on June 19, 2006 at 3:00 pm

The calculus exam that I did today was a good test to see how much information I remembered from the last 5 1/2 months of school. And apparently, the answer to that is: not that much. Anyways, I don’t think we’ll be getting our exams back; the marks are simply immediately reflected into our final marks which are then sent out for the final time to universities, I suppose. I also managed to write a few comic strips while doing my exam, and get some sleep in, as well. The comic strip was about a giant blog who was attacking a random city (probably Tokyo) and eating the citizens (probably Japanese people, because of Godzilla…) It’s very fascinating, indeed.

Video of my singing dog

Posted by Gary King on June 18, 2006 at 10:16 pm

This is a video of my dog. And he sings.

Description at YouTube:

It’s my dog, ’singing’ while I play the violin. He only knows when to sing at the right times!

Some say it’s because it’s hurting his ears, but he runs to the violin when I’m playing, and scratches the door when it’s closed (even if he was in the basement or somewhere nice.) I’m guessing he would rather run away from the sound if it hurt him, instead of plop himself in front of the violin and start singing like that. Also, he sings on low notes but with a fast tempo, too.

I first played this song when I was about 6, so it ISN’T a display of my full potential on the violin…

What’s wrong with formal education? (and I’m finally studying now)

Posted by Gary King on June 18, 2006 at 7:44 pm

I just started studying for my 3 exams (all 3 math courses: calculus, data management, and algebra & geometry) a few minutes ago. I procrastinated a lot for this (as I usually do for tests) because math gives me the chilly willies, bad memories of, well, math, and I seem to like to work with words now more than numbers. The only reason I took all 3 maths in the first place was because I NEEDED them in order to take computer science at the University of Waterloo, otherwise if I had it my way, then I wouldn’t have taken ANY of them. I could’ve learned only what I NEEDED to learn WHEN I needed to learn it, instead of simply digesting the pages and pages of lessons that I had to learn simply to write some tests and exams to see if I could remember it all within a 2 hour period or not (because afterwards, all of the knowledge just disappears, anyways.)

Also, who’s to say you need a formal education to get to where you want to go? Yes, it does give you a better advantage, and it can make you smarter, and all that good stuff - but the same can happen if you are passionate enough about what you want to do. If you are truly passionate about doing something, then too much schoolwork can, in fact, hinder your performance in what you really want to do. I’m not saying I’ll be a university drop-out, or not go to university at all. But I’m also saying that going to university does not necessarily mean that you will be in the top percentile, in terms, say, wealth, or the much more ambiguous ’success’, in our society.

Why I procrastinate

Posted by Gary King on June 17, 2006 at 1:23 pm

I procrastinate, for things that either don’t have a deadline or one that’s far away, for things that I care little about, or for things that I don’t want to know the consequences to. But I think, primarily, I procrastinate because I try to be perfect. I always want things to be perfect, even though I know they will never be perfect. I also give myself this excuse so I don’t have to go ahead doing whatever I’m supposed to do in the first place. I need something to happen that will change my attitude with procrastination; maybe going to university is the change that will help me?

Registered at the University of Waterloo now

Posted by Gary King on June 17, 2006 at 12:55 pm

I’ve registered at the University of Waterloo for my preliminary information, such as what co-op stream I’ll be taking (stream 8 was already full, so I took stream 4. But I intended on taking stream 4, anyways.) The registration all took less than 5 minutes; I thought it would’ve taken longer, but now I see that the real course selections will begin on July 17. I can’t wait!

Yearbook update

Posted by Gary King on June 17, 2006 at 1:16 am

Okay, well since David Tse really wants to know how many comments I’ve got so far in my yearbook so he can get that many, too, I’ve listed some stats about my comments here:

I have 114 comments in my yearbook (so far). I don’t know who half of the people who signed my yearbook are, though, because of the crazy signatures that they have.

Also, what’s up with the comments that people wrote in my yearbook?

These are my estimates for the number of times the following phrases were mentioned:

  • give me money (when you’re rich and famous): 10 times
  • Bill Gates: 20 times
  • comments from friends, and random people as well: priceless

Hurray for yearbooks!
