No laptop for the past few days makes me an unhappy camper

p36293h-38fff67d560b64e935e700040d5fe8d0.jpgDuring these past few days while exams have been running on campus at UW, I’ve been going in and out of the campus so that I can go home to Toronto and have a change of scenery to see if I can focus more on my studying. Whenever I leave any location, the first thing that I always check for is if I have my laptop with me. Well, during one of my quick trips in and out of the campus, I did manage to bring my laptop, and yet, I somehow managed to forget my power adapter for it! This essentially meant that I was SOL and had no laptop to use until I returned to campus! That’s, let’s see… 4 days without a laptop. This marked the first time since I even GOT my laptop that I ran more than a day without using it.

All in all, though, it wasn’t all that bad. I surprised myself at how much I didn’t really depend on my laptop if I didn’t need to; a lot of the stuff that I used were online, including Gmail for email, Google Calendar for my events and tasks, Bookmarks Synchronizer to upload my Firefox bookmarks online, and even ListMixer, a place where I store temporary bookmarks; these are basically my most essential items that I need in order to pass the day. Of course, I was forced to return to Windows XP for this fairly brief period of time as well, and the differences between OS X and XP really dawned on me at that point, such as how inconvenient a lot of tasks are made to be in XP.

I’m curious, can you guys survive without your primary desktop/laptop for a few days, or even a few weeks? Or do you really need to lug it along with you almost everywhere you go? Feel free to reply back by commenting on this post!

Tsk tsk tsk, second time in a month that power adapter got you! Make sure to grab it when going to SF! I lug my laptop around with me everywhere and have an SSH server running on the desktop in case I need a tiny taste of Linux while I am away.

I have a VNC server running on my Windows when I need that, and I can also install Windows and Linux on my MacBook Pro laptop, plus OS X of course, so I’m all set with it :D

Sure. That’s why there’re shows called survior. No laptop for 39 days.
    Cheers.

Of course I can survive. I’ll just install my games onto the replacement computer. I’m assuming I have my CDs with me of course. Even if you do forget your power adaptor when you go to SF, it wouldn’t really matter. I’m sure you’d be able to pop into an Apple store there and buy a replacement.

The tasks aren’t inconvenient in XP, it’s OS X that makes it inconvenient. On a side note that has nothing to do with Windows, I have to reimage my laptop during the next few days. My don’t-shutdown-put-in-hibernate workaround doesn’t work when I have to do something that requires a restart of my computer.

Wow Gary, you love your laptop like its living =O… Nice =]. But isn’t it heavy to carry around with all your books with you?? Or is everything in your laptop >.>

    Kenneth,

My laptop has a lot of stuff on it (of course, all backed up on several different forms of media, but that’s a different story), so it can be very useful to carry around with me. I usually carry it around in a backpack, not under my arm, so it’s not as bad as you think. It’s only about 5-6 pounds, too. :)

No primary desktop/laptop? Ouch. I probably couldn’t go longer than a few weeks without it.

As for the internet? I would be one miserable person if I didn’t have access to the internet for more than a day or two. =P

    Michael,

Yeah, it’s really painful. I’m glad that THAT’S over now! :)
